Can you walk the number of miles in your zip code? Probably not, but collectively you can! The Oxford Community Center and the Oxford Volunteer Fire Company are sponsoring a virtual walk, OXFORD WALKS 21654, beginning on November 14, 2020 through the end of April 2021. The goal is to walk a collective 21,654 miles and to stay healthy as a community.

Anyone can participate and you can walk anywhere—it does not have to be in Oxford. You do not need to be a resident of Oxford to join the collective effort. Indoor walking counts, including treadmills. Participants pay an entry fee of $25. You can walk solo, in groups or teams, indoors or outdoors. Running counts too! Just keep track of your miles from November 14 until the end of April. When you sign up, you will be invited to register in the Oxford Walks 21654 online group. That link is where you log-in regularly to add your miles to the collective total. Don’t want to log in your miles? Drop your mileage logs off to the Oxford Community Center to be input.

Maggie Andersen, Chair of the Oxford Walks 21654 initiative explains, “We came up with the idea as we pondered the approach of late fall and winter during a pandemic. We want people to get out of the house as much and as safely possible. Walking is one way to keep your spirits high during what could be a challenging season because of COVID-19.”

OCC offers free and low cost programs throughout the year thanks to the generous annual fund donors, participants, and sponsors. “This year the definition of participant has changed greatly. We are grateful that the community adapted to the new virtual experiences and outdoor offerings and encouraged the Center to create activities that invite everyone to stay connected. As long as people keep participating, we will keep creating safe events,” says Liza Ledford, the Executive Director of the OCC.

The Oxford Volunteer Fire Company is a 100% volunteer department comprised of members of all ages, serving the community of Oxford and supporting Talbot County. OVFC is equipped with two modern attack engines, a 2750gal engine-tanker, a 105ft aerial ladder, two ambulances, a brush truck, command unit and 27ft fire boat. OVFC welcomes newcomers regardless of previous experience and is always willing to help new members obtain required training and ongoing development. Reach out to OVFC if you are interested in joining their team.

Together, let’s walk 21,654 miles! Participation will benefit the Oxford Community Center and the Oxford Volunteer Fire Company, and your health!
